Breakdance NYC

This work explores the art of urban break dance as a form of cultural identity. My photographs capture the energetic movement of break dancing and the dynamic individual character of each dancer in a series of color and silhouetted images. The silhouettes showcase the quiet and poetic beauty of the bodies breaking in a dance, which by nature is difficult and gritty. I contrast these against the exuberant color photographs, which accentuate the unique style and cultural diversity of each dancer. Break dance has a growing attraction to urban youth around the world because it constantly innovates and reinvents itself. I have taken break dance as the focus of this work because of its global popularity amongst urban youth and its ingenuity and difficulty to perform.
